London, England AP news, May 5th 2012, 6.54 PM Liverpool win FA cup in penalty shoot out

Steven Garrard scored two goals today, one in a shootout penalty kick to lead Liverpool to its eight FA Cup title and a victory over Chelsea, showing why he could be one of England's key players at the upcoming Euros

The Liverpool captain already had set up a goal for Andy Carroll and scored once again to make the game 2-2, sending it into extra time. After a scoreless extra period, Liverpool won the shootout 3-2 with Gerrard taking the last of the five penalties.

Liverpool trailed 2-0 and then 2-1 in the 131st  FA Cup final until Gerard’s 30-yard half volley in injury time dashed Chelsea hopes of any silverware this season. Goalkeeper Pepe Reina tipped a shot by Drogba onto the post with a minute of extra time left before saving two kicks in the shootout.

Gerrard lifted the famous trophy, adding it to the Carling cup, when Carroll started Liverpool's comeback from 2-0 down at halftime.

"It's very special, the supporters are fantastic and Chelsea were brilliant today, but we had the “never-say-die attitude," Gerrard said.”We felt our best chance was penalties, because, in extra time, we had no energy left."

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish said his team gave him some scares. "We like to do the difficult things, but it's not best for the heart," Dalglish said. "It's better to start winning and keep calm, but it didn’t happen that way" "We were up against a team packed with internationals with players who have won medals and have huge reputations," Kenny said. "We put all that aside and almost pulled it off. I told the players that perhaps they have been part of one of the greatest finals ever and they can take great dignity and pride from their performance.

"You can't come much closer than this and next time we know what we have just got to cross that line and get a premier league trophy. I'm not going to say we deserved to win because that would be unfair on Chelsea. Both teams perhaps deserved to win."

Liverpool hit back on goals by Carroll and Gerrard, but Torres put the Hammers ahead 1-0 in the 34th minute. Gerrard fired his late drive through a crowded area to make it 2-2 before 91,140 fans at the new wembley Stadium.

"I'm gutted, very disappointed because I thought we deserved to win it," the Chelsea manager Roberto di Matteo said. "We worked extremely hard, it was a fantastic effort. It just wasn't our day today." He added, “It looks like Liverpool are on their way back”
