Lucas Leiva

I am absolutely gutted to hear about the injury to Lucas.  He has been playing fantastically for both club and country.  This is a player that was once chided by our supporters, but never let that deter him.  He worked his way into our starting XI as well as the Brazil national side -- both of which are very admirable.

He was rewarded last year by being named the Standard Chartered Player of the Season for 2010-2011.  He had the most tackles of all four of the top European leagues for last season and was leading the Premier League for 2011-2012.

I can't help but hold the scheduling for the Carling Cup at least partially responsible.  It was totally unreasonable to ask our lads to play 48 hours after a tough game against ManCity.  Lucas was one of the few players asked to play again after such a short rest ... and the worst possible outcome occurred.

We have recalled Jonjo from his loan spell in hopes of filling this role.  We should have our skipper back soon (I hope) and maybe we'll pick up another holding midfielder in January.  But I think Lucas has left some big shoes to fill.  He has been brilliant.  I'm angry and sad at the same time.

Lucas, You'll Never Walk Alone!

  • OUt of the ashes a new hero will emerge.  Things happen for the best is sometimes hard to grasp, but history will be the judge.  The question is, who will take his place.  I for one would play Agger, Skrtel, and Coates with one of them being the defensive midfielder.

  • If anybody watched the last 3 matches (2x Chelsea and Man city), you will see how much work Lucas puts in running, precise tackling and starting attacks with his quick short passes and even long passes now. He was definitely a constant brick in front of our back 4. Now he is out...i suddenly don't feel so good. You want proof,...just watch the last 15 minutes of carling cup against chelsea...they were controlling the game without either spearing or adam getting near anybody....ball gets in penalty area...and panic hoofing. The only one that can assume that defensive role would be having Gerrard Back quickly....unless Kenny Dalglish decides to compact the midfield with a different formation...Get Well Soon Lucas....we appreciate all you have done for us!
