On tour with the LFC Masters in Malaysia

I’m Liverpoolfc.tv journalist James Carroll and this week myself and my LFC TV colleagues Luke Morley and Richard Goodaire will be in the Far East with members of an LFC Masters team as they compete in two 2012 EPL Asian Masters tournaments in Brunei and Malaysia. Over the course of the next few days, we’ll be bringing you behind-the-scenes updates from the squad so make sure you follow this blog for a unique insight into how the lads fare. You can also follow me on Twitter @James_Carroll84. After Brunei, we're now in Malaysia for the Standard Chartered sponsored Malaysian Masters.

We’ve finally arrived back at the LFC TV offices in Liverpool city centre after a 35-hour journey, so that’s it from myself, Luke Morley and Richard Goodaire. I hope this blog has been able to keep you entertained and informed, and it’s been a pleasure to write it. Stay logged on to Liverpoolfc.tv for details of when you’ll be able to watch the footage we recorded on LFC TV.

We’d like to say a massive thank you to everybody we met in Brunei and Malaysia, the event organisers and helpers, the players involved in the tournament and the Liverpool lads, who were absolutely brilliant to work with throughout and made our jobs easier.

But most of all, we’d like to thank the Liverpool fans we met over the course of our trip. You’ve amazed and entertained us consistently and it was an absolute pleasure for all three of us to see just how passionate Reds fans in Brunei and Malaysia are for this club.

We hope to see you all again soon. YNWA.

Thursday 26 April, 11.30am

The footballers of yesteryear may have long since departed Heathrow, but for LFC TV we’re waiting in the departure lounge for a 1.30pm flight to Manchester. Tiredness has really kicked in, but we’re all in agreement that it’s a small price to pay for a fantastic trip.

Thursday 26 April, 9.30am

As the last of the bags circles around the luggage carousel, the Masters shake hands, say goodbye and disappear off through the exit doors. Everyone is in agreement – it’s been a fantastic trip. All of the Liverpool lads were delighted with the support they received in Brunei and Malaysia. “The fans were incredible,” said Phil Neal. “Everywhere we went, they supported us brilliantly. We’re very grateful to them and our win in the Malaysian Masters was for them.”

Thursday 26 April, 8.50am (UK time)

We’ve landed back in the UK and everyone is eager to get off the aircraft and stretch their limbs. However, those going back to Manchester are facing up to the prospect of more waiting in Heathrow airport. The two-hour delay we incurred due to stops in Brunei and Dubai mean there’s no way we’re making that 8.55am flight.

Wednesday 25 April, 5pm

Everyone is checked in and onboard ready to start our epic journey back to the UK. See you again soon, Malaysia.

Wednesday 25 April, 2.45pm

The last smattering of Masters emerge from the hotel and we bid farewell to Kuala Lumpur as we head off to the airport ready to catch a flight to Brunei. From there, we’ll travel to Dubai onto London and then, for us, to Manchester. Everyone is in good spirits, however. Particularly Phil Neal, who remarks after spotting some lightening in the distance, 'Let’s hope that doesn’t strike us when we’re taxing down the runway to take off!' before bursting into what's now become a trademark laugh” Er...yeah, thanks for that, Phil.

Wednesday 25 April, 10.30am

It's our last day on tour with the Masters ahead of a journey back that takes us from KL to London via Brunei and Dubai. We're then catching a flight back to Manchester on Thursday morning. LFC TV are just heading out into the city centre to get some footage for the programmes that will be put together when we get back.

Wednesday 25 April, 5am

Most of the Masters players involved in the tournament are heading off to bed now after staying up to watching the Barcelona - Chelsea game in the hotel lobby together.

Tuesday 24 April, 9.50pm

We’ve just been setting up for an interview with John Barnes in the hotel lobby when a heckler walked by, who turned out to be none other than LFC legend Phil Neal: “Is that the way it is now, lads? Filming yourself are you?”

Tuesday 24 April, 9.45pm

Standard Chartered put on a great evening tonight, with the entire function decorated in Liverpool memorabilia. Our favourites were these cakes – I opted for Luis Suarez.

Tuesday 24 April, 9.30pm

The Liverpool Masters have returned back to their hotel following a lavish Standard Chartered cocktail event at the stunning Mandarin Oriental hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

Co-hosted by John Barnes, the lads mingled and chatted with employees of the Reds’ main sponsor, while also posing for photos and signing autographs. Robbie Fowler and Phil Neal also took part in a Q&A session.

sc6.jpg

Standard Chartered also gave away LFC gifts to those in attendance, while there were competitions for goodies including an autographed Steven Gerrard jersey and an LFC home shirt signed by the current first-team squad.

 Tuesday April 24, 5pm

The lads are just getting ready to go to an exclusive gala dinner by Standard Chartered. John Barnes is set to host the evening. Meanwhile, Paddy Berger and Vladimir Smicer have been making the most of our last day - they've been out playing golf for most of the day, but the late afternoon rain in KL wasn't ideal for it.

Tuesday April 24, 2.30pm

We’ve just been having a chat with Malaysian Liverpool fan Chang Mei Wan, who took the day off work to come and see her idol Steve McManaman in the cook off - and she had us in stitches after giving Richard something of a dressing down at our table in the Makan Makan restaurant for not using Twitter.

LFC TV’s cameraman protested his innocence, claiming he is too old to Tweet. Chang is having none of it. “You have no excuse,” she tells him in animated fashion. “Everyone is on Twitter, even Kenny Dalglish!”

Chef Prem presents us with one of Macca’s Roti Canais to sample. Our verdict? The Reds’ former No.7 has underestimated his ability in the kitchen – it’s very nice!

Tuesday April 24, 1pm

3mm.jpg

“Cooking’s not my thing,” says Steve McManaman as he enters the Makan Makan restaurant. “I can do toast, though.”

Under the guidance of Chef Prem, Macca and Rufus Brevett are attempting to make Roti Canai – a fluffy Indian pan fried crepe.

“Make sure you put your hat on or I’m not eating it,” jokes Robbie Fowler.

2mm.jpg

While the mixing of ingredients into dough passes off fairly smoothly, attempts to shape the mixture prove problematic, though the chef awards Macca’s effort an eight out of 10. “Are you a Liverpool fan?” asks Rufus, who feels his is the better of the two.

The dough is then pan friend before being served.

“They both did very well,” says Chef Prem. “But I don’t think they’ll be serving in my kitchen anytime soon!”

Tuesday April 24, 10am

It’s our last full day in Malaysia before we begin a long, long journey home tomorrow. There’s still plenty to be done today, though. First up, Steve McManaman will be taking part in a cook off against Rufus Brevett this afternoon. Stay tuned to the blog.

Luke, Richard and I would like to thank Olivia Rumintang from the LFC Indonesia Supporters’ Club for the gifts she gave us this evening.

Olivia is one of the most passionate Reds we’ve encountered on our trip – so much so, in fact, Phil Neal even gave her his winners’ medal from last night’s Malaysian Masters.

Monday 23 April, 10.30pm

The Masters attended a special gala dinner at the Double Tree Hilton hotel this evening. Highlight of the night was Jeff Winter’s charity auction in which all proceeds went to Standard Chartered’s ‘Seeing is Believing’ charity.

Amongst the items up for grabs were a pair of signed Robbie Fowler boots and two Steve McManaman match-worn jerseys.

Once again, there was a great turn out from the Malaysian Reds!

Monday 23 April, 7pm

Hi, Luke here. Rob Jones has just attempted to name LFC’s top 10 all-time appearance makers in a minute – the same test which we presented Steve Harkness in Brunei. Watching from the side, Harkey did his best to put him off by throwing footballs at him, however Jones records a very respectable score.

Monday 23 April, 6.20pm

Just grabbed a quick interview with Phil Neal ahead of tonight’s events. You can read what he had to say on the main website now.

Monday 23 April, 3.50pm

The Reds have just finished an entertaining visit to the Menara Standard Chartered building in Kuala Lumpur.

Around a hundred employees – all Liverpool fans – greeted the lads as they arrived before they sang Happy Birthday to Robbie Fowler, who turned 37 on April 9.

Better was to come, though, when John Barnes was asked to give a rendition of the Anfield Rap.

Game for it, Digger insisted he wanted a partner. Fowler took up the challenge and the duo delivered a few verses from Liverpool’s 1988 FA Cup final song.

Monday 23 April, 2.45pm

A busy afternoon for the LFC Masters, and All-Stars gaffer John Barnes, begins with a trip to the Bernama press agency in association with Standard Chartered.

The lads hosted a meet and greet signing session, before visiting the offices of the media company and holding interviews with local press.

They also presented local fan Azlee Nor Mahmud with a signed Liverpool shirt after the business journalist won a slogan contest with Standard Chartered.

His entry was: "I have been graced by the presence of football gods in the form of Liverpool Football Club. A class that transcends time.”

Monday 23 April, 10am

Good  morning from Malaysia. The football tournaments may be done and dusted, but the Masters still have a few events to attend before we head back home later in the week. Stay logged on to the blog for details.

Sunday 22 April, 11pm

The Masters have returned to the hotel just in time to catch Liverpool’s clash with West Brom back home. It’s been a great first day in Kuala Lumpur, and once again we’ve been left staggered by the sheer fervour for LFC in this part of the world. Thanks to everyone we encountered tonight for being so friendly and helpful. Goodnight and well done Reds once again!

Sunday 22 April, 9.05pm

Fowler lifts the trophy for Liverpool and the Kopites inside the arena go wild. The players then embark on a lap of honour as they’re serenaded by You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Sunday 22 April, 9.00pm

Robbie Fowler has not only been named as the competition’s top goalscorer with 13 goals, but he was also elected the player of the tournament, and is presented with two trophies.

Sunday 22 April, 8.50pm

Champions! Liverpool have clinched the 2012 Standard Chartered Malaysian Masters with a thrilling penalty shoot-out victory over United.

A frantic game ended 4-4, with Robbie Fowler scoring his second of the game in the final five seconds to force the spot-kick drama. Earlier, God had found the back of the net to become the highest ever goalscorer in any Masters tournament.

With the penalties taking place in front of the Liverpool section, Paul Jones saved superbly from David May to hand the Reds the advantage. Berger, Fowler, Kvarme and Smicer all netted before none-other-than Stephane Henchoz stepped up to convert the final kick to clinch the trophy.

Sunday 22 April, 8.15pm

United beat Malaysia 10-2 to eliminate the All-Stars and set-up a mouth-watering final clash with Liverpool...

Sunday 22 April, 8pm

Michael Thomas to LFC TV: “Did you get Rob Jones’s goal? Did you film it?”

Sunday 22 April, 7.50pm

The Reds make sure of finishing first in the group after a pulsating clash with the All-Stars ends 9-8 in their favour.

In a topsy-turvy game, Robbie Fowler struck five times, while Steve Harkness helped himself to a hat-trick. Steve McManaman wrapped up the scoring.

The All-Stars still have a chance of making the final to secure a re-run of last night’s clash, but they’ll need to hope United don’t win by eight clear goals against Malaysia.

Sunday 22 April, 7.30pm

“Get that on the website!” Rob Jones shouts as he spots me writing a blog post when walking back onto the court - haha! Earlier, he revealed to Luke how he’d asked his teammates to help him try and get him a goal – a ‘collectors’ item’ is how Steve McManaman described it.

Sunday 22 April, 7.25pm

Liverpool are through to the final once again thanks to an 8-4 win against Malaysia.

Robbie Fowler netted another treble, Steve Harkness and Bjorn Tore Kvarme both bagged a brace, but the game was notable for a goal from Rob Jones. The full-back went his entire Liverpool career without finding the back of the net, so his strike was met with joyous celebrations from his teammates.

The All-Stars and United drew 4-4 in the earlier game that saw Anfield legend John Barnes make a return to action for the former.

Sunday 22 April, 6.45pm

Comedy moment of the night so far – Jeff Winter momentarily delaying the kick-off of the All-Stars versus United clash to bust some moves to club anthem Levels by Avicii.

Sunday 22 April, 6.40pm

Liverpool show no signs of a Brunei hangover as they get off to a flyer in the Malaysian Masters with a resounding 7-4 win over United.

Robbie Fowler was again the star of the show, helping himself to a hat-trick much to the joy of the Reds fans inside the arena. Stephane Henchoz, Vladimir Smicer, Bjorn Tore Kvarme and Patrik Berger were also on target.

In the tournament’s opening contest, the Premier League All-Stars – winners of last night’s competition in Brunei – won 6-1 against Malaysia.

Could there be a repeat of last night’s final on the cards? Certainly seems that way...

Sunday 22 April, 5.55pm

Just grabbed a quick word with Phil Neal, Liverpool Masters’ manager for this evening. He’s in confident mood. “I’ve passed on a few tips about things I’ve noticed about the All-Stars and United to the lads. By all accounts, they deserved to win the tournament in Brunei last night. I’m confident we can go one better this evening and reward these brilliant fans.”

Sunday 22 April, 5.45pm

7.jpg

Second to Liverpool fans in the noise stakes are a section of ‘Malaysian Ultras’ who are here to support the local side in the tournament.

Sunday 22 April, 5.30pm

The All-Star’s Kevin Gallen has also commented to us about the amazing level of support for Liverpool inside the area. “They’re singing You’ll Never Walk Alone out there, it’s incredible.”

Sunday 22 April, 5.20pm

Manchester United’s Clayton Blackmore has just walked by us in the tunnel and remarked: “It’s like Anfield out there.” Good work, Malaysian Reds!

Sunday 22 April, 5pm

6.jpg

LFC TV has just conducted an impromptu singing session inside the stadium. There’s still an hour to kick-off, but the section of the arena where Liverpool fans have elected to gather is already nearly full and they’re creating quite a racket. We take some photos of the banners and scarves on show, and when we ask one fan to hold his sign up, the entire Reds’ section rise to their feet and deliver a rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone with scarves aloft. It’s an incredible sight.

Sunday 22 April, 4.35pm

The players have arrived at the arena, which is already bouncing both inside and out. Walking around outside, it would appear at least 80 per cent of those in attendance are Liverpool fans and there’s a great atmosphere building up.

Sunday 22 April, 2.15pm

Right, we're about to leave for the Malaysian Masters tournament. Hopefully there will be internet access in the stadium to allow me to do live updates on the blog, but if not then check back later for a report, reaction and photos. Got a good feeling the Reds are going to lift that trophy tonight.

Sunday 22 April, 1.45pm

We’ve checked into our stunning hotel in the city centre and the players are enjoying lunch before departing to the stadium in a short while. We’re greeted by a familiar face in the form of Phil Neal, who flew over to Kuala Lumpur a bit earlier than us. He seems happy to see us!

Sunday 22 April, 12.40pm

We’re heading towards the bus when Vladimir Smicer comes striding back towards us with purpose. “I’ve left my book in the trolley,” he says. Luckily, eagle-eyed Richard spotted it and hands it back to our Czech mate. “I can be an idiot sometimes,” laughs a relieved Vladi.

Sunday 22 April, 8.15am

We’ve checked in at Brunei airport ready for our flight to Kuala Lumpur. Wifi problems in the hotel meant a late night for the LFC TV boys, so a round of strong coffees is in order as we wait at our boarding gate. We’re soon joined in the Coffee Bean store by the Liverpool contingent, and we decide to get a round in for Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Stephane Henchoz. The boys are very grateful, although Luke’s decision to have an early-morning slice of carrot cake is met by quizzical looks from God and Macca. “At seven o’clock in the morning?!” exclaims Fowler. Rob Jones wouldn’t mind a piece, though. If he wasn’t an athlete he says before adding, “What are you laughing at?” Elsewhere, Richard has befriended Frank Lebouef with the pair locked deep in conversation for the last half hour or so...

  • After going thru 3 Masters in the past, and missing this year's ..
I believe I can safely conclude that THIS YEAR HAS BEEN THE BEST !!!

BEST coz so many local fans had access to the players, to meet-and-greet
BEST coz the organisers Football Focus has made sure it has been an inclusive event for all concerned; sponsors, fans & the public in general
BEST coz WE WON THIS TIME after the past 2 disappointments.. though the local English main stream press could have been more generous and prompt in their coverage.. especially of LFC Masters victory and Fowler's heroics..

    bottom line..
LFC knows they have a FANtastic FAN base here in Malaysia that's worth tapping if they know who to reach out to and work with.

    So.. FAREWELL and SAFE JOURNEY..
till the next Masters Football in Asia !!!  YNWA Cool
